Concrete finishing is part science, part art, and part experience. But even experienced crews fall into bad habits that cost time, money, and quality. Here are five of the most common finishing mistakes we see — and how to avoid them.
1. Starting Too Early
The most common mistake is getting on the slab before it’s ready. If you start floating or troweling while bleed water is still present, you trap moisture below the surface. This leads to blistering, scaling, and delamination — problems that don’t show up until weeks or months later.
The fix: Wait for the bleed water sheen to disappear and the concrete to support your weight before you start finishing. Press test: if your boot leaves a 1/4″ depression, it’s too early.
2. Overworking the Surface
More trowel passes ≠ better finish. In fact, it’s the opposite. Overworking pushes aggregate down and brings excessive paste to the surface, creating a weak top layer that’s prone to cracking, dusting, and crazing.
The fix: Work deliberately, not aggressively. Use a chemical finishing aid to reduce surface tension — you’ll need fewer passes and get a better result.
3. Ignoring Weather Conditions
Heat, wind, humidity, and cold all change how concrete behaves. A finishing schedule that works at 60°F and overcast won’t work at 90°F with dry wind. Ignoring conditions leads to rapid set, plastic shrinkage cracks, and surface defects.
The fix: Adjust your approach based on conditions. In hot weather, use evaporation retarders and consider finishing earlier in the day. In cold weather, account for slower set times and protect the slab.
4. Using the Wrong Tool Sequence
Jumping straight to a steel trowel without bull-floating first. Using a Fresno when you should be hand-troweling. Skipping the mag float step. Tool sequence matters — each step prepares the surface for the next.
The fix: Follow the proper sequence: screed → bull float → wait → mag float (if needed) → steel trowel. Don’t skip steps to save time.
5. Not Using a Finishing Aid
This is the one most crews overlook. Plain water or nothing at all means you’re fighting surface tension on every pass. A chemical finishing aid lowers that tension, letting your trowel glide, reducing the number of passes needed, and producing a smoother, denser surface.
